What are some good colleges for pre-pharmacy type majors?

As of right now I am in community college in California. This year I am going to apply to undergraduate school. I would like to eventually transfer to pharmacy school after gaining a bachelor's degree. I am planning to get a degree in either Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Chemical Biology or something relevant to the pharmacy world. I would like to research and create pharmaceuticals as a career. I would really appreciate some suggestions or information on some colleges that are appropriate. Thank you in advance. By the way, the suggestions do not necessarily have to be in California. So feel free to mention colleges in other states.

  1. UCLA is good for pre-pharmacy.
  2. Since you reside in the state of California, you have a lot of great options. I recommend the University of Southern California (a private institution in Los Angeles) along with the UC System as a place to transfer. As far as I know in the undergraduate field, pharmacology and chemical biology is not offered at the bachelors level (at least not in the Florida State University System which I currently enrolled at University of Florida). However, you can major in Biochemistry from the three proposed major. In order to conduct pharmaceutical research, its more relevant to earn a Ph.D. in Pharmacology rather than earning a Doctorate in Pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Also you may want to look at the Barry Goldwater Scholarship which if you qualify (its a very prestigious and hard to get scholarship) will support your post-bacelurate education. Good luck in your career aspirations! :)
  3. I know it is a bit far, but Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia has a great Pharmacy program.
  4. toxicology chemistry pharmaceutical sciences biochemistry pharmacology edit UCLA, UCSF, UOP, Pepperdine, USC, and more
  5. University of Kansas has a great pre-pharmacy program. They are a great medical program period.
  6. Well the best research/pharmacy school in the nation is (hands down) UCSF. As for undergrad, you might want to go to a research oriented school like the UCs. However, you really won't be studying a lot of pharmaceuticals in undergrad so in reality any undergrad is okay. I recommend that you go with your heart and if money is a problem, I would recommend going to a smaller school and do your best. This the the beauty of pharmacy school, it doesn't really matter what university or college you came from, everyone has a chance!
