How dangerous is it to dye your hair yourself with cheap dye from the Pharmacy?

Someone told me the chemicals in cheap ways of dying hair can cause severe damage to your hair and can cause it to thin out and fall out. Is that true?

1. I don't think ALL of them are actually gonna do that. . and what exactly do you mean by "cheap" anyway? As in brands like Revlon Colorsilk? Coz my mom has been using that for about 7 years now and no, she isn't bald yet. If they do cause your hair to fall out, I really don't think they'd be on sale as much as they are.
