24 Hour Pharmacy Pharmacist Knowledge Base
24 hour CVS pharmacy in NYC? I have been running around like a lunatic all night, and have stopped at four CVS pharmacies-- two of which were still open, (W58th, W42nd) but did not hear what I waned to from the pharmacist. I suppose I am being stubborn, or just hoping for the impossible, but would like to if there are any other good CVS pharmacy's open 24 hours before I actually start running around more. I need the pharmacy to be open as well, not just the store itself-- I only need one more pharmacist's opinion, as I plan to make the third my final. Thank you No, CVS is awesome!
24 hour emergency pharmacy...? does anyone know of one i can call? my husband took gabapentin and he had paxil in his system. i'm worried that since both are neurological drugs, they might not mix well. both are prescribed to him, the gabapentin is from a little under a year ago, the paxil he just started in June. he's sleeping like a baby (weird cause he has apnea).he said, before he feel asleep, that if it weren't for the dizziness he'd be on top of the world. i included this information in case a pharmacist happens to read this question. Thanks so much!!! I searched for the closest 24 Hour Walgreens (an hour away) and the pharmacist said it was fine. Thanks again!!!
What takes the pharmacist so long to fill my script? Ok...so I go to the 24 hour pharmacy at 5 am cuz that is when i get off work. I go to the same pharmacy all the time...i am in their computer...i have the same insurance for 10 years...i have same copay..i turn in a script for a medication I've had many many times before....it's 5 am...there is NO ONE in the pharmacy....and the guy says the typical line I always here....."it'll be 20 minutes".....what?? So for you pharmacists or pharmacology techs....why the hell does it take 20 minutes to count out 30 stinking pills if you know my insurance is good and the medication is covered......I never understand why it takes so long. Its not like he has to make the pills himself he just had to count them. And some scripts are pre-made in the box and they just slap a label on it and hand it to you...and that still takes the usual 20 minutes...so what's up?
Have you ever had a pharmacist give you the wrong prescription? It just happened to me an hour and a half ago at my nearby Walgreens. Fortunately, the store is only a mile from home, the pharmacy is open 24 hours, and I've been on my meds for 12 years, so I know what the name of it is, what it looks like, and how to spell it. As soon as I got home, I opened up the package and realized I was given the wrong medication! My medication begins w/ the same letter as the mistaken one did, but the spelling of the two, the appearance between the two, and the uses of the meds are totally different. The pharmacist apologized several times, and I politely said everybody makes mistakes. Then she said it wasn't my mistake- an obvious way to protect against a lawsuit! I wasn't going to sue anyway, but this type of mistake can be dangerous! I definitely wouldn't want the responsibility of a pharmacist! If this has happened to you, please tell me the name of the pharmacy but not where it's located for privacy reasons. Thanks.
Emergency - suspected suicide intent and discovery of illicit medication? I need urgent advice. A vast quantity of pills has discovered tonight in the family home. The pills are loose, in a plastic bag and appear to have been obtained illicitly, i.e. not medically prescribed. Out of the 7 or more pill types, I have managed to identify 4, as the following: Priadel Citalopram Seroxat Nortryptiline I need to identify what the other pill types are. Invoking emergency mental health assistance at this stage could cost the person their job, therefore I need to understand are the other pills of a nature that would effect the person's suicide, so that further indications as to the person's intentions may enable a decision on how to proceed. There is a VAST quantity of pills in the bag. I have tried NHS Direct, emergency out of hours GP line and 24 hour pharmacy, to no avail. Is there a doctor or pharmacist that can help please? Thanks for the answer. I am not fit to judge and possibly cost the person their job if I have got things grossly wrong. They may well have been prescribed them and told no one.
I need help from a Mature Woman over 20 years old! I had sex.. and now I'm worried..? I had sex with my boyfriend for the first time (I'm 20). At first we started without a condom...but then before getting to far into the moment he put on a condom. After a few minutes the condom slid off so he put it back on and we kept going. He pulled out before he came at the end..and I don't think any really got on me. About an hour after I was laying in bed freaking out because it was my first time and I am in NO WAY ready to get pregnant or take care of a baby right now. So I left and went to a 24 hour pharmacy and bought the plan B pill just in case. I took it within 3-3 1/2 hours of having sex. My questions are... I don't really remember when I had my last period so I don't know if the pill will automatically make my period come(if I'm not pregnant) after the first week or if I have to wait till when i would have normally had it. The pharmacist was explaining it...but it made no sense to me. How long after I take the pill should I take a pregnancy test..? Or do I have to wait awhile to know if I am or not? And.. am I just over reacting? I mean... it was my first time so I feel like I'm just worrying...but I just really can't be pregnant. I had sex..it was my choice...my consequence..but I have so many people depending on me to get through school and make something of myself. If I screw up now... I just don't know what I'd do. Also...do you know what the best birth control is on the market..? And if you do..what kind do you use? Thank you soooo much to everyone who answers this kindly and maturely!!!!
Question about prescription? I get the generic form of xanax which is Alprazolam 0.5 mg. Tonight when I went to get my refill they were out of the generic form that my insurance covers, but so that I wouldn't run out, the pharmacist gave me a couple of white pills with "breaks"? in them? Until the others come in. I guess these are the real xanax. He didn't give any instructions and this isn't a 24 hour pharmacy, but can someone tell me how many mg each "break" in the pill is? There are 4 slits in one skinny pill. For it to equal 0.5mg, should I take 1/4 or 1/2 or the whole pill?
How long does it take to get DHEA out of the system? Attention Pharmacists, Pharmacy-enthusiasts, naturopaths, health enthusiasts, Med Students, wanna be med students, etc., etc.: If someone started taking (self prescribed) 25 mg of DHEA in Aug. 2008 and then increased the dosage to 75 mg of DHEA in Sept. 2008 and then STOPPED COMPLETELY in mid-Jan. 2009, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE for the DHEA TO LEAVE THE BODY? After reading this: "The oral bioavailability of DHEA is in dispute — some say it is as low as 3%, some say it is “excellent”, others say it is “variable”. The half-life of DHEA in the body is also debatable — measurements range from 15 minutes to 24 hours"... I'm wondering if it's already OUT since 24 hours have elapsed? http://www.delano.com/Articles/DHEA.html Thanks in advance! I posted this question b/c I remember reading that it takes 4 months for the DHEA to build up and actually work in the system, but after researching DHEA some more, it seems like it is a very potent steroid/hormone and perhaps it kicks in faster. Possible side effects are why I am so keen to get it out of my system. I'm drinking lots of green tea to help flush it out too! Thanks for the responses thus far. And Pharmacy dude, I'm so glad you can interpret the half-life and bioavailability data and apply it to this situation. Thanks again!
Can you take extra strength acetaminophen when pregnant? I know that you can take acetaminophen when pregnant, but I didn't know how safe it was to take the "extra strength" rather than the "regular strength". I was told 2 different things but 2 different pharmacists. I was really sick last weekend, so my husband went to Target pharmacy to get me some medicine. My husband explained that I had bad lower back pain for the past few days, and the pharmacist said that I may get more relief from the extra strength pills and that they were safe even though i was pregnant (35 weeks at that time). Today, I went to the pharmacy to ask about something else, and I had mentioned I was sick and what I took. This other pharmacist said she only recommends taking regular strength acetaminophen when pregnant. So, of course, I am freaking out because this is my first baby. I don't think i took more than 4 (500 mg) extra strength pills over a 24 hour period, and i probably only took 10-15 pills over the past week. What do you think? Will my little guy be ok?
So what do you think about this bill headed to the Arizona state Senate? "Arizona state lawmakers on Wednesday approved legislation that would impose a string of new restrictions on women and minors seeking an abortion, as well as allow Arizona pharmacists to refuse to dispense emergency contraception on moral grounds." Basically now when minors want to get an abortion they have to have a written and notarized consent from a parent or guardian. And for adult women they have to have a 24 hour "reflection period" before they have an abortion. So the state is now trying to tell women as if they jump the gun on the choice that they need 24 hours more to think about what they are doing! And get this one, if I were to go into a pharmacy and want to purchase an emergency contraceptive (the Plan B pill) and the pharmacist behind the counter had a "moral objection",basically he was a Jesus freak, he can refuse to sell it to me. What are your thoughts? http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2009/03/12/20090312abortion0312.html Not slavery,it's there job to fill prescriptions! And the Plan B pill is not an abortion pill you fool. Maybe do some research and then get back to me. And as for minors that have an abortion I totally think they should have a written consent by a parent or gaurdian but getting it notarized is just silly. It's up to the girl and her parents. Ok little lady, maybe you should reread my question and the details to it.Obviously you didn't read the whole thing.
Wana laugh, I hope this is funny..? You know you're a nurse if... You believe every patient needs TLC: Thorazine, Lorazepam and Compazine. You would like to meet the inventor of the call light in a dark alley one night. You believe not all patients are annoying ... some are unconscious. Your sense of humor seems to get more "warped" each year. You know the phone numbers of every late night food delivery place in town by heart. You can only tell time with a 24 hour clock. Almost everything can seem humorous ... eventually. When asked, "What color is the patient's diarrhea?", you show them your shoes. Every time you walk, you make a rattling noise because of all the scissors and clamps in your pockets. You can tell the pharmacist more about the medicines he is dispensing than he can. You carry "spare" meds in your pocket rather than wait for pharmacy to deliver. You refuse to watch ER because it's too much like the real thing and triggers "flash backs." You check the caller ID when the phone rings on your day off to see if someone from the hospital is trying to call to ask you to work. You've been telling stories in a restaurant and had someone at another table throw up. You notice that you use more four letter words now than before you became a nurse. Every time someone asks you for a pen, you can find at least three of them on you. You can intubate your friends at parties. You don't get excited about blood loss ... unless it's your own. You live by the motto, "To be right is only half the battle, to convince the physician is more difficult." You've basted your Thanksgiving turkey with a Toomey syringe. You've told a confused patient your name was that of your coworker and to HOLLER if they need help. Eating microwave popcorn out a clean bedpan is perfectly natural. Your bladder can expand to the same size as a Winnebago's water tank. When checking the level of orientation of a patient, you aren't sure of the answer. You find yourself checking out other customer's arm veins in grocery waiting lines. You can sleep soundly at the hospital cafeteria table during dinner break, sitting up and not be embarrassed when you wake up. You avoid unhealthy looking shoppers in the mall for fear that they'll drop near you and you'll have to do CPR on your day off. You've sworn you're going to have "NO CODE" tattooed on your chest.

A question about wound care ? Hi! So I was in the kitchen one day and got a little excited with my new chef's knife. There I was chopping coriander, and my mind wondered... chop :( The knife went through my finger diagonally. It mustn't gone very deep as I felt no pain but there was profuse bleeding. It also went through my nail and made a wide "U" at the top of the nail; but was still attached. It went into the skin of my thumb too. After washing and picking out coriander (actually there was one bit left as I was scared to move the bit of nail too much! :/), I applied pressure, raised my hand and ran to the pharmacy down the road. The pharmacist said it didn't look too bad and as it was the weekend, I couldn't visit the local surgery. I applied antiseptic ointment (Savlon) and applied a plaster, and wrapped my finger with a waterproof white tape 'dressing' so I could continue cooking. Now having set the scene my actual question(s) is/are as follows: [*] I've been changing the dressing every 24 hours and the bleeding stopped after the first dressing. There is no pain but on the first day there was a dark haematoma-like bruising. So I washed the area again carefully and reapplied the ointment, plaster and bandage. These things are airtight and waterproof so should I be letting the wound to "breathe" or is this an old wives tale? [*] Is it normal for the skin that has been covered for 24 hours (on several occasions) to develop a lighter/wrinkled hue to the surrounded skin? In some areas (for example I assume where the ointment has collected under the bandage) the area is extremely white and in contrast with the other areas around it. Is this just because of saturation or is it a sign of infection? I am on a very very busy schedule and I would be amazingly grateful if I could get feedback on my situation. I look forward to your replies. Thanks! Thank you for the replies Jessica S and Butterfly. I panicked at Jessica's reply but I'm a little more relaxed now with Butterfly's other end of the spectrum reply... but to be safe I may just pop down to the surgery and they'll send me to the ER if necessary. Thankfully its my left (non-dominant) hand and therefore I can try my best to keep it out of harms way during the day. The bandage/dressing I applied was originally in fear of squashing/deforming the wound as I slept! I'll continue to monitor this thread and thanks again for the replies! Oh I forgot to mention that the wound itself has cleared up nicely, the bruising has disappeared, there is a little flappy skin and the cut part of the nail has reseated itself like a jigsaw and holds in place without the bandage. Pressing around the nail and on the actual flap of skin does not sting or hurt. There is no secretion and the only cause for concern was the slightly too-long-in-the-warm-bath look of some bits of skin in the covered top section of the thumb (and not on the actual wound/around the wound itself). I hope the above paragraphs weren't too incoherent!
The doctor overdosed my baby? I had to take my daughter to the doctor today because she has a fever. At the doctors office they gave her 8 ml of tylenol. When i went to the pharmacy to pick up some more medication for her, the pharmacist thought the dosing was too high so he called the doctor and come to find out she messed up the dosing. My daughter should only have had 3.5 ml. The doctor called me and told me that she messed up and not to give my daughter any more tylenol for 24 hours. What would you do if this happened to you? my plan is not to sue, i honestly dont think it will do me any good, this is a military hospital.
Need help/info about Morphine 15mgs extended release pills.? THIS IS A VERY DETAILED AND LONG QUESTION BECAUSE IT IS ABOUT MORPHINE WHICH I FEEL IS A VERY STRONG PAIN MEDICATION. YOUR TIME TO READ THIS AND POSSIBLY HELP ME WILL BE EXTREMELY APPRECIATED...... I was just prescribed 15mgs of extended release Morphine pills today for endometriosis. This was my first visit with this new doc today. I didn't have a chance to ask him all the questions I had about this medication. He was in a rush because he was backed up with patients because this is the day before Thanksgiving and this was his last day in his office and won't be back till Monday. I asked "isn't this medication too strong? I've never had Morphine before." and he replied by asking "Have you ever taken any other pain medication before?" and I said "Yes. I've taken Percocet, Vicodin, Demerol, Dilaudid and Codeine but I'm allergic to the Codeine" and he asked me if Codeine was the only one I ever had a problem with and I said yes and he told me since I did fine with all the other pain medications then Morphine shouldn't be a problem. Ok....well I wanted to address my concern about the strength of Morphine but he rushed so fast, I didn't have a chance to ask more questions. So I'm hoping someone with medical knowledge or personal experience with Morphine 15mgs extended release can tell me what to expect and maybe answer this question. The highest dose of pain medication I have ever taken in my entire life was 15mgs of Oxycodone. I have never taken any more than that and I have never taken anything stronger. Even when I had Dilaudid it was only 2mgs which from what I was told is not as strong as 15mgs of Oxycodone. So if 15mgs of Oxy is the only strongest medicine I've been on, isn't Morphine 15mgs way too strong for me? I am 27 years old and yes I am over weight. I am 5'5 and 250lbs. (Most of my weight was gained because of different meds I've been on for the endometriosis) I am only telling these details in case someone can answer my question and I know it is sometimes important to know height and weight when it comes to taking pain meds. I am just scared to take this. I mean when I think "Morphine" I think seriously strong pain medication. I was told to only take it on the days I'm having the most pain and tonight I am hurting so I need to know as much info. as possible. No there is no one on call. I live in a little country town and around the holidays the doctors never have an answering service available or a doctor or nurse on call. My pharmacy closes at 7pm (it's already closed now) and it's the only pharmacy in this town. The next closest one is 2 hours away so I can't ask my pharmacist and even if I could, I would feel better if I could ask my doctor OR a person who has personal experience with Morphine instead. I did call the local E.R. but they can't answer questions over the phone and I'm certainly NOT going to admit myself to the E.R. just to ask this question. I'm very sorry to make this such a long question but I need to provide as many details as possible because this is a serious medication, I've never had Morphine before and I'm very scared of it. I also have pain and I cannot be in pain especially since it's the holidays : ( I want to enjoy my family and Thanksgiving without being sick or in pain. Also I would like to point out that I WAS on the Oxycodone and soon it will be 24 hours without any opiate and I will start to have opiate withdrawal. So I'm not only needing to be out of pain but I also don't want to go through any withdrawals. The reason my doc put me on this is because he said I needed around the clock pain relief, not just 4 to 6 hours of relief that the Oxys provide. Isn't Morphine too strong? Could I possibly overdose on this pill? This is what scares me so much......but I have to have some pain medicine and Morphine is what he gave me. I just wish I knew more so I could feel safe. Please help with any knowledge and personal experience you have about Morphine and if I will be ok. I would appreciate help very much and please know that it is very needed. I know this was a long & detailed question but I figured the more details and info I provide, the better someone could possibly help me. Thank you! -Jenn.

I need a "prior authorazation" for Fentanyl patches..why and more important HOW LONG DOES THIS TAKE? Hi. I have chronic back issues and i am currently perscribed Percocet for pain and Flexeril for nighttime. I recently had epidural shots and they did not work AT ALL..To my surprise, the pain seems to have jumped at least 3 levels... I really didn't want to bc i didn't want to seem bothersome, but i finally went to my Dr. yesterday and explained how much pain I'm in, that its making it hard to go to the bathroom and more important--its starting to wake me up in the middle of the night!! Which has never happened..I wake up with TERRIBLE pain every day but I've never been woken in the middle of the night w/ my pain. I explained to him that i take the medicine (Percocet) as directed, but I feel like it may not be working as well anymore.. (I'm also awaiting to see a nerosurgeon) He gave me a perscription for something called Fentanyl patches..I'm not sure what the strength is but i imagine it can't be too strong...Anyway, the insurance came back and said that they need "prior authorization"....The pharmacist says all the Dr. has to do is call the insurance company and tell them why i need it. The girl at the Dr. office said she would get right on it. I called the pharmacy to find out how I'll know when it has been filled and they checked and said that my Dr's office hasn't even called them yet ;( I called my insurance company also bc the girl at my Dr's office said that this can sometimes take a couple weeks! I'm in sooooo much pain..and i have to work ect.. So I called my insurance company and s/w the pharmacy dept and the lady said No, it should not take any longer than 24 hours....the 2 weeks is if u need to have a medical review..if it was denied..not "prior authorization"...My question is who is right? How does this whole thing supposed to happen? Because from what i have read on the Internet, these patches take a while to kick in..at least 3 hours..and like i said, this pain is unbearable and i don't wanna keep taking my pills..i won't..my Dr is very nice but he does not give early fills..plus i don't wanna get off track and i want to definetley have enough medicine for the holidays. Thanx in advance!
My son has been sick for going on 4 days now.? For the Past three days my 27 month old son has been vomiting, had diarrhea and has a couple of times complained of an itchy bum. He is vomiting on average of 2 times a day and once is always at night in bed. The first day (may 20. And its now the 24th)started with constipation (he was crying in pain and poop was hanging out of his bum) I went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist gave me a gentle liquid laxative which turned out to be for adults. I gave him half a tablespoon and a half hour later started to vomit and has since then. I have been giving him Gatorade to keep fluids in him but it just wont stop. We are going on day 4 now and I'm really getting concerned. He has been eating at the same things he usually eats. So I dont think it would be a food thing. And no one else in the family is sick so I dont think it would be a bug. We took him to the doctors on the second day and he said it was from the laxative. I went back to the pharmacy and they said that they shouldn't have giving it to me but their book said that up to 10 mls a day for an infant was ok and I had only giving him 7 mls. So I'm not really sure what this could be. Any ideas?
going into a very long distance..I need support? we've been together for 7 years..I am 23 and he is 24..He is graduating in 1 week from engineering...and I am going to start studying over seas in Pharmacy school by 1st of october...We lived 4 hours (in car) apart for the past 5 years because he went away for school...we saw each other about once a month on average...We care alot about each other...and I love him so much, there is no other for me...and I'm pretty sure he feels the same towards me...He's happy for me that i'm going study pharmacy because I always wanted to be a pharmacist....It's tearing me up the fact that i'm leaving him here in canada, and i'm going to be oversears for about 2 years...I dunno what to do, we said we'll communicate but that will be sooo hard knowing that there's about 18 hours in plane in between us...I'd come back to visit between semesters, for maybe 3 times a year...I'm just si hurt, sad, crying, and feel soo devistated..I love him so much,i don't wanna leave..But it's what i wanna be,a pharmacist.
Should I take BOTH the planb/morning after pill PLUS my regular birth control? I started the pill 2 weeks ago and because I had unprotected sex, I just took plan b a few hours ago(less than 24 hrs after intercourse). The leaflet to my pill says that its ok to not use another form of birth control(ie: condom) after 7 days on the pill. I have been taking it on time everyday since I started but I called a few cvs pharmacies to ask whether the pills would be at full efect as of now regarding my situtation, and most said it's better to use a back up until you finish a full cycle of pills, which I haven't yet. This is why I am now taking plan b. Anyway, I probably should have asked the pharmacist thi as well but for the sake of it, have you ever taken both your BC pill and plan b togheter? I have to take my BC pill at 10am as scheduled but then I have to take the 2nd plan b pill at 6am, 12 hrs after the 1st. Should I just take the plan b alone or will that mess up with the effectiveness of the pill?
What are your thoughts? http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2009/03/12/20090312abortion0312.html I posted this question twice.Once in the goverment section and the other in the religion. Haha guess how many pro-lifers are on my ass over there!
